The concept of Industry 4.0 offers new perspectives for the global industrial sector. New challenges and opportunities are emerging, along with the need to achieve interoperability to promote safer products and services. In this context, the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are leading strategic processes to develop and improve technical standards for Industry 4.0 around the world. Brazil stands out in this scenario by actively following the discussions on the subject, positioning itself as a frontrunner in the debate.

The publication “Standardisation for Industry 4.0: Challenges, Opportunities and Trends in Brazil - Highlights from the first National Forum on Standardisation 4.0” provides an overview of the results of the National Congress for Standardisation in Industry 4.0. In addition, it presents the standardisation projects that are currently addressing technical barriers hindering the implementation of Industry 4.0 in manufacturing companies in Brazil.

The publication was developed within the framework of the German-Brazilian Dialogue on Quality Infrastructure (QI). It is the result of a collaboration between experts from the private and public sector as well as members of the academia who discussed the topic in three technical workshops. The results were compiled by the team of the Organisational Engineering Centre of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil.
