On 8 July 2025, The Ministry of Industry of Indonesia (MoI), the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (DKE) discussed a recent development of digitalisation in standards namely SMART Standards and its initiative in Germany.

As part of the ongoing German – Indonesian Bilateral Dialogue on Quality Infrastructure (QI), an insightful exchange on the implementation of SMART Standards in Germany recently took place. The bilateral dialogue, launched in April 2021, is a cooperation between the

Ministry of Industry of Indonesia (MoI) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).

The exchange welcomed representatives of the Centre for Formulation, Application, and Enforcement of Industrial Standardization (PPPPSI) of the MoI, who expressed strong interest in Germany´s progress in their SMART Standards (Standards Machine Applicable Readable and Transferable) and the joint Initiative Digital Standards (IDiS) of DKE and DIN. Among them was Mr. Bambang Riznanto, as the Head of the PPPPSI, MoI who actively contributed to the discussion.

Central to the session was Germany’s Initiative Digital Standards (IDiS), jointly led by DIN and DKE. This initiative is paving the way for a digital transformation of the standardisation landscape by promoting machine-readable, process-integrated standards through the SMART Standards model. The SMART Standards are designed to improve efficiency, scalability and accuracy across industries. Through the design, it aims to create more value for products sold in the market and boosts industrial competitiveness. As part of its progress, the IDiS is also surveying the readiness of the industries in Germany to implement the SMART Standards effectively.

Mr. Raymond Puppan, Senior Principal Expert in Conformity Assessment and Project Manager of Digitalisation at DKE, presented the concept of SMART Standards and the SMART Standards Utility model. He emphasised the procedural and business potential to make standard content accessible to machines in a process-ready form which enables the parallelisation of standards application process that is essential for future-proof industrial processes. The presentation was based in the IDiS White Paper 3, “The business-oriented benefit of SMART Standards in standards application processes”. Joining him in the exchange were Mr. Janos Koschwitz (Digital Transformation Manager) and Mr. Max Reith-Koch (Project Manager for International Affairs), who engaged in a lively Q&A session. Mr. Andreas Wernicke, Lead Expert of Staff office Strategy & Transformation at DIN Solutions, provided deeper technical insights into the SMART Standards framework and IDiS.

Looking ahead, continued technical exchanges and collaboration on topics such as SMART Standards and the Digital Product Passport (DPP) are expected to deepen bilateral ties and support the development of a modern, digital QI systems in both countries.
