Currency and Payments

1. What is the local currency, and where is the best place to exchange money?

  • The local currency in Germany is the Euro (€). You can exchange money at airports, banks, or currency exchange bureaus, but it is often more convenient to withdraw cash from ATMs using an international credit or debit card, as the rates tend to be better. Be sure to notify your bank that you are traveling internationally to avoid any card issues.

2. Are credit cards widely accepted in Germany, or should I carry cash?

  • While credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are accepted in many places, cash is still widely used in Germany, especially at smaller shops, restaurants, and local markets. It's a good idea to carry some cash with you. Apple Pay also works in many stores and shops.

3. What is the tipping culture in Germany, especially in restaurants or for services like taxis?

  • Tipping is appreciated. In restaurants, it is customary to round up the bill or tip around 5-10% for good service. For taxis, rounding up to the next Euro or adding a small amount (e.g., 1-2 €) is common. Tips are usually given directly to the server or taxi driver, not left on the table.

Technology and Connectivity

1. What kind of mobile phone services are available for foreign visitors?

  • Germany has reliable mobile networks with major providers like Vodafone, Telekom (T-Mobile), and O2. Prepaid SIM cards with data are available at convenience stores, electronic shops, and airports.
