Contribution of Indo-German Cooperation for Harmonised Electric Mobility Standards at Conference of the Charging Interface Initiative

On 18 October, GPQI-India presented the contribution of the Indo-German cooperation for harmonised electric mobility standards at the second India Conference of the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) in New Delhi. The conference was co-organised by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the German Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA). It brought together Indian and international experts from government and industry.
Over the past four years, the government of India has introduced several initiatives to promote electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. Given the Indian needs, priorities are electric two- and three-wheelers as well as busses. Conference participants regarded the extension of the Combined Charging System (CCS) standards to low-voltage vehicles as a critical step for the adoption of electric vehicles in India.
Supported by GPQI, the Indo-German Working Group on Quality Infrastructure brings together experts to collaborate on international standardisation for small connectors for light vehicles as well as fast-charging solutions for two-wheelers. Through the cooperation, Indian and German experts served as co-convenors of an ad-hoc group at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which released a report on standardisation needs for electric mobility. Further Indo-German cooperation topics include standards for swappable batteries and communication protocols for charging systems.
The Indo-German Working Group on Quality Infrastructure between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Indian Ministry for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD) has the goal to reduce technical barriers to trade and strengthen product safety through political and technical dialogue of relevant ministries, regulators and industry. Concerning the cooperation on electric mobility, Indian partners include the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI), the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the Ministry of Power (MoP), and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
